Aspect du microphone
First contact with the product, its chassis is as sober as it is attractive. Its size is correct while it sports a matte plastic coating for the lower area and mesh for the microphone part. The finishes are clean and everything offers a professional rendering. Note that no button is available directly on the microphone confirming the lack of on-the-fly functionality.
Base and foot
Most important point, although it is a standard for professional XLR microphones, it is not equipped with a stand or support making it unusable in its simple reception state. What’s more, you should also think about buying an XLR cable. Lots of information not widely distributed by the manufacturer, but essential for the user.
Does it fit all arms?
To begin with, we must remember that the microphone does not have any basic accessories. Whether it is a pop filter or a boom adapter, you will have to pay between 30 € and 40 € depending on the desired element.
The best solution for this microphone remains to use one of the manufacturer’s boom poles or even to take advantage of the bundle (300 €) offered when it comes out and allows you to take advantage of the new Elgato booms. In our case, it is the Wave Mic Arm LP that we use.
- Native 5/8” thread compatible with the main poles on the market.
- 3/8” and 1/4” adapters included, for compatibility with major thread types.
A very complete software
Important before continuing this paragraph, the Wave Link software is only available with the Wave XLR interface. As we are moving to a higher range of microphones, we can only advise you to take advantage of the bundle bringing together the elements Wave DX, XLR cable, Wave XLR, Wave mic arm. Although the software is quite complete, you may need some time to master it perfectly.
Upon installation of the device and its software, a number of new audio outputs and inputs are introduced. This is where everything gets complicated and at the same time becomes extremely interesting. Wave Link allows you to manage your inputs and outputs in order to offer only the content that interests you during your broadcasts and recordings.
To put it simply, you will be able to listen to music while recording one of your videos without it being heard in the background. Of course, the final interest is much deeper, but everyone will be able to take advantage of it. You can also integrate up to 9 different sources.
On the mic
As announced at the beginning of the article, the microphone has no on-the-fly control. It will be necessary to refer to the possibilities of the Stream Deck and Wave XLR.
In the mic
It is important to note that Elgato is not alone in working on this microphone. Indeed, the brand has once again teamed up with LEWITT, a manufacturer specializing in the industry, in order to offer quality equipment adapted to content creators.

This is certainly the essential point to raise this microphone, and the difference is clearly felt. Condenser microphones are best suited for vocal production and recording.
In addition, many features will allow a faithful and professional rendering. To name just two, the Wave DX mutes mic feedback when your voice exceeds a certain threshold and smooths out tonal deviations to prevent unpleasant saturation. A set that is intended to be very complete for both the user and the listener.
Finally, the internal microphone capsule is of the Cardioid type. This is the only possible option and the latter will pick up sounds close to and in front of the microphone as a priority.
Associated with the Wave XLR
Find most of the necessary information in the paragraph intended for the Software. Note that it is also possible to add many effects or audio configurations specially implemented by Elgato: Elgato EQ, NVIDIA Broadcast Noise Removal By Elgato or even the RNNoise allowing you to adjust the minimum opening noise of the microphone. Of course, VST integration is possible while Elgato offers an exhaustive compatible listing.
The Wave XLR in its physical form brings functionality on the fly, visible via a circular LED system, like boosting mic/sound volume and even mixing in between.
48V phantom powergives the possibility of connecting, with the ordinary cables, microphones which need electric current. Some microphones, mainly condensers, cannot work without a power supply. This is not the case for the Wave DX which you will have to use without this power supply.
Associated with Wave XLR and Streamdeck
Elgato does not lose the north and makes the most of its peripherals. As with most of them, an application is available on the StreamDeck to be able to manage the Wave Link software directly from the latter. Everything at your fingertips, the latter allows you to modify the volume of each source, but also the mix between headphone output and streaming.
In short, the StreamDeck allows full control over all audio while allowing you to pair it with other Elgato apps or products. Flagship device of the brand, it is at the center of the ecosystem. An initial profile is offered to you if you don’t want to worry, while a more complete panel is available to you in the right area of the software.
A crystalline and compressed rendering
As usual, here is a short video to help you better understand the rendering and quality of the microphone. Synthetic, it will be easily possible for you to identify whether or not it corresponds to your expectations.
Wave: 1/3 and DX what to choose?
It is important to know and understand your needs and expectations before making a choice, regardless of the product or even the manufacturer.
The choice of Wave: 1 or 3 microphones is made first of all on the price since they are worth 70 and 160 € respectively. So, yes, the Wave:3 is more expensive than the DX, but it has many features, connects via USB and takes advantage of plug and play software improvements without an associated peripheral and has native support. We invite you to take a look at our microphone test to learn more about its possibilities and advantages.
We recommend the choice of this microphone for those who are starting from scratch and have the necessary budget to accommodate the complete pack. Indeed, the call price of the Wave:DX, of 119 €, can be likened to a lure obliging the purchase of the bundle. With all the associated peripherals, there is a substantial set of settings possible for even more professional audio feedback.
Conversely, unless you already have all the other related products, you will have to settle for a simple microphone without a control button, for software that cannot be used with a preamp other than the Wave XLR.
